When should I start/continue cervical screening — and can I self-collect?

In Australia, women and people with a cervix aged 25–74 are invited for a Cervical Screening Test every 5 years. You can choose self-collection (a simple vaginal swab) if you prefer; your GP will guide you.

BreastScreen Australia invites ages 50–74 every 2 years (free). People 40–49 or 75+ can discuss screening with their GP and still attend.

LARCs (IUDs and the implant) are the most effective reversible options. The Mirena® hormonal IUD is now approved for up to 8 years; Kyleena® lasts 5 years. Your GP can help you compare choices.

The sooner the better. Levonorgestrel works best within 72 hours (may help up to 96h); ulipristal acetate works up to 120 hours (5 days). A copper IUD is the most effective option and can be used up to 5 days.

Offer annual opportunistic STI screening to young people, with tests tailored to risk (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B). Your GP will advise based on history and symptoms.

Yes. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a common cause of iron deficiency/anaemia. See your GP for assessment (bleeding causes, iron studies) and treatment options (medical or procedural).

Women’s/pelvic health physiotherapists provide assessment and targeted pelvic-floor training; this supports bladder/bowel control and sexual function. Your GP can refer you.

Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms when there are no contraindications. Non-hormonal options exist too; care is individualised.

Aim for your first antenatal visit by 10 weeks. Early checks typically include blood tests (e.g., FBC, blood group/antibodies, hepatitis B/C, HIV, syphilis, rubella), urine culture, and screening discussions.

Yes. A free catch-up dose is available up to age 26 under the National Immunisation Program (different advice if immunocompromised). Ask your GP or pharmacist.

Self-collection with an HPV test is a clinically validated option under the National Cervical Screening Program and is offered through your healthcare provider.
